Chinatown Mall

From 2009-2010, I was one of three Chinese artists selected to work on a public arts project for Brisbane¿s new Chinatown Mall.

My contribution for this project involved creating an entrance at the Anne Street end of the Mall. Constructed in glass this structure has three purposes; it has to be functional, aesthetically beautiful & also has to represent a contemporary Chinatown.

By using the latest LED technology, the lighting effects can dramatically change the look of the structure. On one side is a dragon silhouette and the other a pagoda. The LED has other features as well such as zigzagging and flashing streams of light, that can be programmed for special events, like Chinese New Year. The lanterns in the mall also change colours in synchronisation with the colour changes on the gate.

This is the first Contemporary Chinatown in the world . As well as this it has been selected from a large group of contemporary design projects to feature in the HEAT Multimedia Presentation at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. It will also be exhibited in the Venice Architecture Biennale later in the year.
